Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (www.rackspace.com) recently announced it has leased a large amount of office space in Middlesex, England to serve as its headquarters in the Europe, Middle East, Africa region, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

The company has been actively growing out its managed hosting and cloud computing business in international markets, opening data centers in the UK and Hong Kong to support this expansion.

Last Wednesday, Rackspace signed a lease with Hyde Park GP for approximately 101,000 square feet of office space in Middlesex, according to the SEC filing.

The office is located relatively close to Heathrow Airport, as well as Rackspace’s green data center in Slough, which the company opened in May 2008.

The lease includes reserved space for employee training, a which has always been a significant focus for the company.

Though Rackspace is not set to move into the office space until November 2011, the lease shows that the company now has the potential to embark on growth opportunities in the European and the Middle Eastern cloud markets.

The hosting provider also has a UK headquarters at the Stockley Park business park in Uxbridge.

Rackspace has already seen significant growth in its US cloud business, bringing the company to more than 100,000 customers and 62,000 servers.

Technology provider Brocade (www.brocade.com) announced on Thursday it has opened a new data center and engineering labs in a 75,000-square-foot space at its new San Jose headquarters. The move comes a couple months after Brocade introduced its converged fabric-based solutions which optimize data center networks to support virtual servers, applications and data.

The new facility incorporates key elements of flexibility, energy efficiency, sustainable design and technology innovation, says the company. Constructing the new campus allowed Brocade to design its engineering labs and data center to the highest standards and best practices, from the ground up.

The company collapsed the access and aggregation networking layers for a flat Layer 2 network, which provided more available bandwidth and simplified operations. Brocade consolidated three San Jose-area data centers into one 5,000-square-foot facility, allowing it to reduce its physical footprint requirement by 30 percent and its data center energy consumption by 37 percent.

The consolidation process will eliminate 4,450 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year for Brocade. Additionally, the company was able to decommission about 133kW worth of equipment, translating to $200,000 in yearly savings.

In a blog post, Brocade VP of IT and CIO Tim Graumann discussed the process of building the data center and R&D facility where he offers key specs and other details.

The technology provider increased the electrical density of its racks by 21 percent by using more rack unit space and designing new rack elevations, boosted its vertical space by 12 percent with its flat floor lab, consolidated five R&D engineering lab locations into one R&D Lab, and introduced an extremely capable, highly-available yet simple network based on Brocade NetIron MLX technology.

“Brocade’s new cutting-edge data center incorporates design features that are directly linked to our Brocade One vision — unmatched simplicity, investment protection, non-stop networking and optimized applications,” says Michael Hirahara, vice president of global real estate, facilities and services at Brocade. “Our data center and R&D lab go beyond just being functional spaces. They are a testament to Brocade’s technological expertise, corporate vision and core values.”

The new data center also includes many advanced design features that optimize energy efficiency, including hot-row/cold-row configuration and hot-row containment, custom-designed, energy-efficient in-row cooling units with built-in fan redundancy, fully automated controls at the POD level with energy monitoring capabilities, energy-efficient chillers and cooling towers, and high-efficiency motors with variable frequency drives.

Additional features include occupancy-sensing lighting controls, an early warning smoke detection system, and a fire suppression using dry pipe and dry agent to protect equipment.

With these features in place, Brocade now has a calculated Power Usage Effectiveness metric of 1.3, while comparable data centers of the same size typically have a PUE greater than 1.5.

Brocade has posted a video tour of the new data center on its blog, narrated by Brocade VP of global real estate, facilities and services Michael Hirahara.

As more companies store their information on third party platforms and cross international borders in order to serve their clients; ensuring that a hosting provider is US – EU Safe Harbor certified can be critical. The importance of data security and privacy becomes more and more paramount as business operate across borders. This couldn’t be more true of the growing hosting industry in the United States. For Blue Box Group, a Seattle based managed web hosting company, the decision to seek certification couldn’t have been easier. Blue Box Group announces that it has achieved U.S.-EU Safe Harbor certification status from the U.S. Department of Commerce. This designation recognizes that Blue Box Group meets or exceeds the European Union’s directives for data privacy and protection practices. Nathan Kaiser, Chief Operations Officer noted: “We provide custom hosting solutions to many types of organizations, and now we can expand our offering to those needing a hosting provider that guarantees Safe Harbor protections.”

Certification requires Blue Box Group to comply with the seven Safe Harbor principles covering: notice, choice, transfers to third parties, access, security, data integrity, and enforcement. These principles are intended to give individuals more control over the accuracy and transfer of personal data. Benefits of this certification for Blue Box Group customers include the requirements for prior approval of data transfers will be either waived or automatically granted by all 27 Member States of the European Union. It also ensures that any claims brought by European citizens against U.S. companies will be heard in the U.S. thereby helping to contain legal expenses.

Today announced that it has signed a multi-year colocation agreement with Capgemini Canada Inc.(“Capgemini”), a member of the Capgemini Group, a leading global provider of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. Under the agreement, Capgemini is taking approximately one full Performance Optimized Data Centre (POD) of space, in PEER 1 Hosting’s new flagship data centre located in northeast Toronto. The initial term of the agreement is five years and includes options for renewal and to expand the total amount of space utilized. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.“Just a few short months since the opening of our new Toronto data centre, we have been able to secure a key anchor client,” said Fabio Banducci, President and CEO of PEER 1 Hosting. “We are proud to work with a company like Capgemini to enhance their own computing power and provide their clients with another solution to their hosting needs.”

“Teaming with PEER 1 Hosting enables Capgemini and its affiliates to effectively deliver our high value services to our expanding client base,” said Kim Lesley, Vice President of Capgemini Canada Inc. “The relationship between Capgemini Canada and PEER 1 Hosting is a powerful one in the Canadian marketplace and is designed to support a robust, secure, predictable service delivery for clients in a number of different industries.”

This is the most efficient data centre PEER 1 Hosting has built to date, with increased power densities, high reliability, and robust security. Building it in four sections, with each section built as a separate POD, enables customers to scale their data centre capacity to rapidly meet their evolving needs, while allowing PEER 1 Hosting to efficiently manage growth. Each of the four PODs has the capacity for approximately 270 cabinets, equivalent to roughly 7,500 servers.
