WordPress 3.0 ‘will be judged on its security performance’

The success of the latest version of the WordPress content management system will be judged upon the level of security it offers, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Guardian technology blog, Charles Arthur noted that WordPress 3.0 marks a significant point in the blogging platform’s evolution.

He noted that WordPress “does a terrific job in the main” of providing good security, but claimed that risks still remain.

“The fact that there are so many blogs out there using [WordPress hosting] means that vulnerabilities and exploits abound,” Mr Arthur stated.

“As it is open-source software, you have to take that as you find it – and there are plenty of things that can be done to harden it.”

Earlier this month, Paul Wallbank told Smart Company’s Business Tech Talk blog that the content management function offered by WordPress sets it apart from other blogging tools.

Over-charging driving test websites clean-up

Learner drivers are being fleeced by websites that will book your driving test at a huge mark-up.

The rogue sites confuse young drivers into thinking that they are dealing with the official site by appearing with an online search for the Driving Standards Agency or DSA.

We put “DSA driving test” into Google and the first site to come up was www.theorytest.net.

It charged £51 to book a theory test – an outrageous 69% mark-up on the official DSA price of £31.

The AA has heard from learner drivers who have also unwittingly booked practical tests through unofficial sites, paying an extra £30 on top of the standard fee of £62, or £75 for a weekend or evening test.

“These so-called services invite you to type in the same details you would if booking directly with the DSA, only on a different website and at a hugely inflated cost,” said Simon Douglas, director of AA Driving Schools.

“Some sites include ‘DSA’ in their Google search listings or web page headings, which can make it confusing as to whose site you’re on.

“Paying hiked-up fees for ‘help’ to book your test is a waste of money few learners and their parents can afford.”

The official website is www.dsa.gov.uk

If you feel you’ve been ripped-off by an unofficial site you might have trouble chasing a refund.

We tried to contact www.theorytest.net but the site gives no postal address, email address or phone number.

It was registered by Iomart Group PLC, which manages web-hosting for businesses.
We asked Iomart for contact details for theorytest.net but were told: “We cannot give out details about our customers.”

NIIT, Hitachi Asia Launch New Cloud Service

IT solutions provider NIIT Technologies Limited (www.niit.com) and IT services provider Hitachi Asia (www.hitachi.com.sg) announced on Monday they have partnered to launch a high-reliability cloud computing service.

The cloud computing hub will be hosted in NIIT Technologies’ data center in Bangkok and will initially only serve local Japanese corporations.

Both companies drew on their expertise in data center management to launch the first phase of its cloud computing services.

Hitachi Asia and Hitachi Information System designed and architected the cloud system while NIIT Technologies implemented and maintained the system.

Both companies will use their strengths for solution designing, SaaS application development, sales and marketing to promote the new offerings.

Parallels Plans Singapore Cloud Services Event for September

Hosting and cloud enablement software firm Parallels (www.parallels.com) announced on Thursday that its annual Parallels APAC Summit will return to Asia in September this year, scheduled for September 24 to 26, 2010, in Singapore.

According to the announcement, the aim of the summit is to provide cloud service providers – a group that includes hosts, telcos, communications service providers, distributors VARs and ISVs – with insight and strategy for enhancing productivity and efficiency in Asia.

“The success of last year’s Summit demonstrated both the sizeable opportunity represented by cloud computing and Parallels’ position as a key strategic partner for players, especially in Asia Pacific where we are experiencing tremendous growth,” says Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels, quoted in the press release. “The fastest adoption of cloud services is amongst small businesses where the cloud allows for fast deployment of IT services in a cost effective and flexible manner. Asia is a huge growth area for cloud services as an estimated 38 percent of the world’s small businesses are in this region. The Parallels APAC Summit is the key event in Asia for hosters and service providers to profit from the cloud.”

The three-day summit will take place during the SingTel Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, and, according to Parallels, will feature keynote sessions presented by Parallels executives, as well as guest speakers from other organizations, including Warren Adelman, president and COO of Go Daddy.

Adelman was a presenter at the Parallels Summit in Miami, held in February of this year. And in a Thursday announcement on the opening of a new office in Hiawatha, Iowa, Go Daddy mentioned plans to open an Asian office this fall.

Parallels APAC Summit will also include a cloud services panel featuring a range of Asian service providers, including Bhavin Turakhia from Directi in India, Daryl Webb from Webvisions in Singapore, Jason Frisch from Tsukaeru.net in Japan, Michael McGoogan from AussieHQ in Australia, and Natalie Kong from PacHosting in Hong Kong.
